CSPS Hall brings Dwayne Dopsie & The Zydeco Hellraisers to NewBo City Market

Two-time Grammy-nominated Dwayne "Dopsie" Rubin will take the Bankers Trust Stage at NewBo City Market on July 16, 2021. This concert will be the second of four in a new free concert series, presented by CSPS in partnership with NewBo City Market.

Just across the street from the Market, CSPS Hall is known as Eastern Iowa's center for contemporary art, music and theatre. This free concert series will feature traveling artists from across the country and will be free to attend, as a celebration of what we hope is the beginning of the end of the pandemic.

Although inspired by tradition, Dwayne has developed his own high energy style that defies existing stereotypes and blazes a refreshingly distinct path for 21st century Zydeco music, which is defined as a form of dance music with roots in French, African American, and Afro-Caribbean styles.

This singer, songwriter and accordionist has performed all over the world since debuting his band, Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers, at age 19. The Louisiana native writes both the lyrics and music for his songs and describes his upcoming album as, “soulful with a touch of blues and old time zydeco feel."

Dwayne grew up teaching himself how to play accordion, watching videos of his father and Clifton Chenier with dedication to perfect the craft. The knowledge of Dwayne’s musical ability combined with his band members can easily equate to over 100 years of experience.

Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers will play at Rock the Block on Friday, July 16th starting at 6 p.m. CSPS will also be presenting the concerts on August 20th and September 10th. These concerts are free and open to the public. A full lineup can be found at cspshall.org/events.

This event is made possible by the support of Coldwell Banker Hedges Realty and GreenState Credit Union.
